Personality Disorders Therapist

Do you think you may have a personality disorder? First of all, there is no shame in having a PD. A PD is a way of being in the world that you learnt in order to survive the environment of your early childhood. At that point, it helped you get the love, safety and attention that you needed. But now it is keeping you imprisoned in unfulfilling patterns of behaviour.

To give you an example…

You could have great difficulty opening up to or connecting with people. This could be to the extent that you fear that no one will know if you die one day, or at the other extreme, that you will lose yourself completely if you get close to someone.

Or, you could have difficulty holding down a job because your team-mates cannot stand your know-it-all, condescending attitude. You could find that you lose interest in a person the moment they seem to truly care for you, which is in unbearable contrast to your hidden self-hatred.

Lastly, you could be stuck in a pattern of over-extending yourself, then feeling “taken for granted” and being full of rage at how no one cares as much, as consistently or as deeply as you do. You could find that you want nothing more than emotional intimacy, yet you seem to sabotage any healthy relationship that begins to develop.

How I can help?

Working with a personality disorder is difficult, and takes time. However, it is also incredibly rewarding if you are willing to do the work. In therapy, we will work to bring your self-destructive patterns into awareness. Slowly, we will go from intellectual insight into these patterns to emotional insight as to the core fears and motivations underlying these behaviours.

We will work on your communication skills so that you can use your words and ask for what you need instead of acting out. And we will help you learn to self-soothe so you can take care of yourself when your childhood trauma is triggered and you find yourself on the brink of making an unhealthy choice.

Depression is a debilitating mental illness that feels like a fog you cannot see the way out of. It is not sadness, though grief, if unprocessed, can be a contributing factor to depression. The worst possible scenario is if you have been ill for long enough that suicide seems like the only way out. If you are suicidal, please know that you will not feel like this forever, and get emergency help via suicide helplines, or better yet, ask a friend to take you to the psychiatrist now.

Even if you are not suicidal, you will probably require medication to help get you to your baseline functionality so you can make it to therapy and start to work on healing your psychological wounds. These could be severe blows to the self-esteem arising from life circumstances, trauma that was never acknowledged or processed, or even an existential crisis that you have not had the time to work through.
